Central Park Zoo

  • A bite-sized bit of nature just steps from Fifth Avenue.
  • Strengths

    • It’s super convenient so you can just pop in for an hour or so, as opposed to making an entire day of going to the Bronx Zoo.
    • On a nice day, it’s a great diversion for kids – and youthful-minded adults.
    • Check out Gus the polar bear, the sea-lions and the penguins.

    Shortcomings

    • The zoo is pretty small with a limited number of exhibits.

    Insider tips

    • The Tisch Children’s Zoo lets little kids get up close and personal with gentler animals.
    • You can throw birthday parties for your kids at the zoo. For more info call Linda at 212.288.7112. They have different themes for different age groups, including animal alphabet safaris, treasure hunts and animal Olympics.

    Anecdotes

    • I’m not sure who is more impatient – my husband and I, or our kids. Central Park Zoo is perfect for all of us. It’s bite-sized, educational, outdoors, and fun, without the schlep.

    Perfect for

    • I’d say kids under 8, but depending on your mindset, it can be fun at any age.
