The Upper East Side is bordered by Central Park and the East River, from 59th street to 96th street. The UES has the highest concentration of wealth in the US. It got that way in part due to industrialist tycoons like Andrew Carnegie, Henry Clay Frick, and John Jacob Astor (Astor used to ride around the city after work in horse and carriage and point to property he wanted to buy, after which his minions would snap it up). They also amassed world-class art, much of which is on display in the many museums of the UES including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim, the Whitney and the Frick. The UES has many of the best middle and high schools in NYC, including Spence, Chapin, Brearley, Dalton, St. Bernard’s, and the Lycee Francais. Of course, the UES is a shopping mecca, featuring the most expensive retail real estate in the world, and the highest concentration of retail stores with more than $1 million in sales in the US.
