The West Village is bounded by Houston & 14th streets, West of 6th Avenue. At one time it was a Native American tobacco farm, and later its own hamlet. When it joined Manhattan, it wasn’t forced to convert to the street/avenue grid system, so it’s got a funky layout, with some streets that twist and curve in ways sure to confound tourists. It also has beautiful tree-lined, cobblestoned streets with rows of townhouses. In the 50’s and 60’s, the West Village was a center of bohemian counterculture, made famous by Jack Kerouac, Dylan Thomas, and Bob Dylan, among others (Dylan Thomas drank 18 whiskies and 2 beers at the White Horse Tavern one night – plus a dose of morphine for good measure - and dropped dead the next day). Landmarks include the Jefferson Market branch of the NY Public Library, which was at one point the New York Women’s House of Detention – the only Art Deco prison. Today the West Village is home to fine boutiques, restaurants and bars, and families stroll where beat poets once used to brood.
