The Lower East Side is bounded by Grand Street, Bowery, and Houston. It’s one of those rare areas where you can see the city changing before your eyes. In the 1840’s and again in the 1950s, poor immigrants from Europe came to the LES in droves, many living in squalor. The notorious tenements once housed 240,000 people per square mile, with no toilets or showers (peee-yew!). The smell wasn’t the only thing tough about the LES - famous inhabitants included gangsters Lucky Luciano, Meyer Lansky & Bugsy Siegel. There are still traces of the tenement past (most notably the Tenement Museum at 97 Orchard Street – open for tours only) but recent gentrification has made the area a hipster haven, with lots of great people watching, shopping, and dining.
